Read a few old sci-fi books, and you'll see numerous references to instant computing via light waves. It seems like a few engineers at Intel are taking their leisure reading to heart in this ongoing endeavor.

Composed of six key elements, the silicon photonics project aims to replace purely silicon chips with a low cost, high bandwith medium for transmitting data. There are a few hurdles yet to be overcome, but initial testing is already yielding 12.5 Gbit transfer rates. To hope this line of funding is given national funding is an understatement. The technological applications of a hybrid fiber or purely fiver networking system would in theory allow near limitless expansion of not only the internet, but personal computing/networking in general. Intel provided a nice video to help drive that point home.

http://techresearch.intel.com/UserFiles/en-us/photonics/apd_flash/SiliconPhotonics.html

It's an interesting read, and I encourage all of you to retweet or e-mail the source link to your congressman, representative, or anyone in a high position of power you have access to. This should, and must be funded.

Old Habits Die Hard

In our hustle of flashy electronics, gaming, and just plain working too much, it's pretty easy to miss "little" tidbits like this. Those major maladies we still suffer from as a species are actively being hunted, and in cases like this, we're using an old and sometimes flawed tactic to do it; the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2010/07/06/1008300107.abstract?sid=f84ba227-1626-4527-85db-896cbfcfc223

Case in point, researchers are reprogramming a genetically programmed virus to carry T-cells capable of fighting off targeted cancer cells. This method, known as Adoptive Cell Transfer (ACT) of T cell Receptors (TCR) essentially creates T cell packets with signatures for different types of cancer, which are then released into the patient. The packets use their programmed homing beacons to seek out cancerous cells and do naturally what we traditionally seek out chemotherapy for. Results thus far are promising, and the initial tests have shown (via PET scan) that these genetically developed antibodies are capable of seeking their intended targets and eliminating them.

In essence, creating a virus similar to HIV that reprograms T cells to seek and destroy cancer isn't such a bad way to tackle an old problem. With proper testing, hopefully this will become a viable, possibly primary alternative to chemotherapy.

Free iPhone/iTouch Apps of the Day

Digital Heist - Download in AppStore

Alright, this game is pretty awesome. Turns out some Russian hackers digify you and put you in the "mainframe of the United States Federal Reserve". Help them get the money, and they let you out. Don't, and well, they don't.

It's pretty simple, you have to get from one end to the other by tilting your device to avoid little square pegs in the middle. I don't know what they do, I haven't touched one yet. I'm assuming they're bad however. Anyway, once you get the money, the alarm sounds and you have to go back where you came from. Sounds simple, but it's really fun, give it a shot. I don't think I'll get bored of this one any time soon.

More after the jump.

Flubby Physics - Download in AppStore

This game is interesting as well. You start off with a few practice levels telling you, you need to make red blocks disappear. A few levels later, you get green blocks and black blocks; they're haunted apparently. But you always need to save the green ones. Only problem is, the game lives up to its namesake, tapping the blocks the wrong way causes them to move this way and that, the laws of physics taking over and making everything fall off screen. I got bored after a few minutes, but it's a neat little time waster.

Navy Patrol - Advanced Premium - Download in AppStore

Okay, I unfortunately have not been able to play this game. It just will not load. Which is too bad because it looks like a pretty kick-ass RTS for my iPod Touch. I wonder if it's because I have the new OS. Anyway, I'm listing it for those out there who may be able to get it to work. I'd post the description, but they don't have one. Just listing all the people who are gushing about how awesome this game is. (And I went and searched for it for you so you and took a screenshot so you don't have to visit the site.) For the simple reason of:

Yep. Because apparently, people are worshiping false gods according to them.

To go and protest where people are just going to have some harmless fun for a weekend, all for nothing, because they think some of these people are going to hell because they like their comic books; just screams publicity stunt. But then again, this is Westboro I'm talking about here. They've done countless things like this in the past. Shame they're still around; it's people like this that give reputable Christians and Catholics a bad name; and I can say that without being either.

But now, they're also going to demonize adults and children alike, who spend their free time reading comic books? Sure, they go to cons to buy and sell them, dress up like their favourite character for a day or two, but then a good majority go back on home, back to work, to their families, to their churches, and continue living their lives, as what I'm hoping, to be good people. Free of the so-called worship, this church is saying they do.

Don't get me wrong, there are people who take things too far in their life, become obsessed with them, but that can happen with almost anything, even religion.

This instance, to me, happens to be the pot calling the kettle black.

They should be going after the real abomination here: The Platypus.

(via blastr)

This Would Probably Sell Better Than Real Sonic Games.

Normally I don't see much fun, or use in ROM hacks, but I found this one very interesting. It's one of those hacks that makes collecting rings in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 bad for you, forcing you to run around the stages just to avoid rings. The game itself is intact, which makes it harder, since the stages are designed to help you actually collect them.

I won't spoil it for you though. I enjoyed the first one, I did really. But I have a horrible problem when I play sandbox games unfortunately; I tend to just run loose in the city and rampage or collect orbs, so I hadn't actually beat Crackdown. So with the help of a friend, we sat down two nights before the game came out, and beat our games(since he hadn't beaten it either). Turns out I was only four bosses away; whodathunkit?

To be honest, I have been waiting for Crackdown 2 for a very long time. Upon day of release, I was off and went to the store and grabbed my copy, happily plopping it in my 360, praying to the game god in the sky that it wouldn't RROD. It booted, albeit loudly, and after a few minutes I was dropped in game. After some droning tutorial, I was set loose to wreak havoc on a new city.

Except it wasn't. It was the same damn city I had just been in two nights before, only kicked around a bit to make it seems like something big had went down. But that was alright, the games "story", was that all hell had been let loose in the city, and I was there to clean it up. To give it that shine that it had before turning into this uninspired mess of a city I haven't seen since Bubsy 3D. So, I let it slide.

I ran around excitedly, shooting the bad guys who decided to shoot at me, who, as it turns out are called Cell. They went and salvaged some old cars and weapons from the old gangs in the last game. These guys are your enemy. You're main enemy. Your only enemy.

"What about the freaks!?", you ask. Well they're, there too. Only they flit around randomly during the day, and come out full throttle at night. But that's it. That's all you have.

There are no bosses. Nothing for me to take over but these random Tactile Points, charging a few beacons, and protecting them until they charged up enough to blast themselves all over the faces of any Freaks within a certain radius. Let me tell you; it gets old quick and after a few of these, the game just seems to get repetitive.

I wandered aimlessly, going where ever my map told me to go, collecting orbs along the way, sometimes coming across "Renegade Orbs". Now these are kind of cool, requiring you to be deft and quick, as these orbs run away from you. Some of them take paths that just make you want to strangle yourself, but it's okay. It was something different.

But the rest of the game wasn't. It was a watered down, copy/pasted version of Crackdown 1. There isn't much more to say about it. I've summed it up.

Oh? The multiplayer. Yeah. Just add three other people to the single player game. There you go. There's your multiplayer. A few friends can help you take over Tactile Points and charge/protect beacons, and that's cool and all, but it doesn't go back to their game. Yes, like in the first one, you still have to help your friend take over the points on his game, then go back to yours and do it all over again; but there truly is no sense of accomplishment in this game. Having to go through the same tripe again, while not satisfying just makes the game seem like you have "events" for "events" sake. I suppose they thought this would make the game last longer. There is also PVP, and you've got Rocket Tag, Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch to choose from. And they all are, exactly what they sound like.

What the hell has Ruffian been doing this whole time? All it seems they did was take out the bosses, add some points, copy and past the city and re-skin it in the most shit brown they could imagine. It took me two days to beat this game, and that's only because I had to work the next day. This should not pass as a sequel; this will not pass as a sequel; not with me, and hopefully not with any of you.

I won't lie to you, as hard as I'm being on this game, it is fun. It's fun to romp around the city with my friends and blast shit to pieces as we collectively run around like so many Batman/Superman spliced hybrids, but, as many others have said, and I'm saying it too; play the demo.

Play it over and over again, and that, my friends, is what it feels like to own this game.

[My2Cents] Sin & Punishment 2: Star Successor

Alrighty. So, I pre-ordered my copy of Sin & Punishment 2; after finally picking it up last night, I popped it in to play this evening.

I'm not really too keen on delving into the story, so here's the summary of the game from its wiki, who can give it to you straight better than I:

"Taking place many years after the Successor to the Earth, Star Successor reveals that there are two dimensions present within the universe: Inner-Space and Outer-Space. In Inner-Space, there multiple Earths, watched over by beings known as "The Creators" (literally referred to as "God" in the Japanese version). The creators have guided mankind to defend their planets and fight, destroying mankind whenever it strays from its destined path by attempting to bring about peace. Outer-Space sends invaders, however, to deal with Inner-Space, and sends an agent in the form of a human girl to infiltrate Earth-4. An agent of Earth-4, Isa Jo, is sent to find and kill the Outer-Space infiltrator, only to find that the girl has become infatuated with humans due to a lack of her own memory, aside from knowing that part of her name was "Chi." Naming her "Kachi," Isa decides to protect her and help her to live, something which goes against the creator's wishes. As a result, the creators send out a group known as the Nebulox (G5, or the "Group of Five Countries" in the Japanese version), led by Isa's former ally Deko, to kill Kachi and Isa for his betrayal. Adding to this are the beings known as the "Keepers," lifeforms which have worked to destroy any supposed contaminants to Earth-4, which have attacked humans and Outer-Space invaders. Isa, already having denounced the creators for their cruelty, decides to go on the run with Kachi to escape the Nebulox, board an Air Ship, and stop the Nebulox once and for all. "

This game is pretty damn awesome so far. Playing it on normal mode at the moment; controls are pretty smooth and I didn't find the difficulty to be too daunting; challenging certainly, but never enough so that I wanted to throw my controller down in rage mode.

The story and dialog is kind of cheesy and campy, of course, you expected it to be. But it's not as bad as I was expecting, it's tolerable. For those of you with the NA versions, it comes fully packed with Japanese voice-over and subtitles so the game can be played completely in its native language if that's your thing.

One of the cool things about the gameplay is being able to dodge enemy fire at will, and also being able to use melee attacks on anything that just happens to jump out in front of you; both things that are hardly present in any other typical rail-shooter. (Speaking of which, some people classify this as a shmup. Others call it a rail-shooter. I am undecided. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.)

There's never a dull moment on screen which is great, you're constantly shooting or dodging something, testing your ability keep up with both. There's even multiplayer for those who want to co-op it up with a friend on their couch at home. Which brings me to my next point:

The multiplayer... is a tad dissatisfying. The first players character is most prominent. The second players character is never on screen. Most of you might insist that this is okay, that's how rail-shooters are, and I would agree with you in a second. However, watching the first player jump, dodge, shoot, and use a sword against the vast amount of enemies on screen, while you sit there and just shoot, is kind of boring to say the least.

Now if you're with a younger child or girlfriend who's not very good at games and yet wants to play with you, but you don't want them to get you killed, this is perfect. You do all the hard stuff, they just aim and shoot. And when or if they get tired of playing(as I did), they can sit their wiimote down and just walk away.

That's how much your measly second player presence is needed in co-op.

But, despite my harsh feelings on this so called co-op, don't let that detract you from the game. It is indeed amazing, awesome, and every bit as fun as it can be. The gameplay is fun and dynamic, fun can still be had with friends; the music is great and catchy, and it will certainly give you a challenge, should you be willing to accept it.

[summary via Sin & Punishment 2 Wiki ]

Kevin Butler is my hero

In what I feel was the best feature of all of E3, one simple speech summed up what I rant incessantly about to my friends; we play games because we are gamers. Before I continue, I'll state flatly that in theory, the PSPGo is a great device and I want one. In execution, however, Sony dropped the ball, and they are owning up to it, if only through PR double-speak.

In saying the device was an experiment, they are telling the truth; the PSPGo was a very brave attempt on Sony's part to test the waters and reception of a download only gaming-centric device. To their merit, the Go has a lot going for it, and I could throw out a laundry list of things I like, but instead, I'd like to point out the ultimate failure of this little experiment; games.

Pricing woes aside--and that's a rant in and of itself anyway--whether through lack of negotiating power or foresight, Sony did not get the publishers to back their slick new portable. Poor title selection, inconsistent release dates, and terrible pricing all play a part in the Go's flaming descent into obscurity. It's a shame, because with the clout Sony has in certain circles, the PSPGo could have had an easy opening run, followed by a decent sustained cycle of releases.

Discovering that consumers like their physical purchases is hardly something to be proud of given this has already been done in another market. If they wanted a success, the easiest way to bridge that gap would be to offer a bundled digital copy of their retail media with each new purchase of the game. You still get your disc, manual, case, and potential pre-order bonuses, but at the same time, you get a retail sale of the LEGAL digital copy (which costs nothing to produce and distribute to the companies anyway). The digital extras for DVDs have been this way for at least four years now, so why not use the approach for games too? It solves the gripes of people wanting a backup of their legally purchased games, offers them their purchasable media, and keeps everyone on both sides happy, plus it could easily be tied to a PSN account to further facilitate the need to redownload again should the need arise.

As it stands, the PSPGo is a failure in the public eye due in part to simple oversights that have already been toyed with in other industries, and begging the question; why isn't the left hand aware of what the right is doing?

Sonic Colors! So far, from what we've seen of Sonic 4, they're getting close to it. But then out of the blue(heh, yeah you know you like that), yesterday was announced that they are making another new Sonic game: Sonic Colors.

No, those aren't really Pokemon. He has built an amazing interstellar amusement park, floating in space around Sonic’s home planet, bursting with incredible rides and attractions. However, all is not as it seems as Dr. Eggman has abducted an alien race called Wisps and is harnessing their colorful energy to fuel a sinister plot. However, before Dr. Eggman completes his evil plans, Sonic discovers his mysterious theme park in space. When he arrives, Sonic finds he is also able to use these alien powers and is ready to help! Sonic will need all his speed and skill as he faces this test, but, empowered by the alien energy, it’s a test he’ll pass with flying colors!

FEATURES:

• Non-stop high-speed action
• Collect and engage the new power-ups derived from the colored energy of the Wisps!
• Unique Color Power for Wii™ and Nintendo DS™
• Perfect blend of 3D & classic 2D perspectives on Wii, and solid 2D dual-screen gameplay on Nintendo DS!

Sounds interesting enough to me, let's just hope that they make a game worth playing and pull it off properly. I'm tired of all the new honest to goodness crap they've put out. When Sonic Unleashed's day time levels were the closet thing we had to a decent Sonic game in years, you have to know it's a bad sign.

However, I am a little worried, seeing as Sonic Team is handling the one on the Wii and Dimps is doing the DS one. Sonic Team, come on, you really have to pull through on this one.

I don't know how much longer I can blindly hand over my faith to you and watch you crush it before me while simultaneous taking my money.

I don't think I could handle it again.

I don't... I heard an edited brief of the following the Splinter Cell Conviction release trailer that details the intentional "accessibility" of the newest title. Companies are expected to deliver a bigger, better experience with each outing they commit their cornerstone characters to, yet as the years progress, it almost seems at times the gameplay is suffering under the weight of this demand. Gone are the days of Contra or Duck Tales (and yes, I'm showing my age here), where a game could be both challenging and rewarding without being off-putting. Today, if a game presents enough of a challenge (see Monster Hunter), the masses cry foul and denounce it in favor of more mainstream entertainment such as HALO 3, or the newest iteration of Call of Duty.

Granted, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare had a stellar single player experience, but what of its sequel? I've heard numerous accounts of its bungling through a campaign that accomplishes few if any feats to top its predecessor other than the infamous airport scene, and even that seemed more for shock and awe than an inspired moment of gaming. More and more, developers seem to be turning away from what made their games unique or just plain amazing, and jumping on the "accessibility" bandwagon of more casual titles. Boishock 2? Nothing new under the hood. A fresh coat of paint, and tacked on multiplayer to disguise its fear of the unknown does not a worthy successor make.

So I put it to you, the reader; would you prefer a step back from the excuse of multiplayer in our current generation of gaming in favor of a better, more cohesive and undiluted single player experience?

New Sh*t to Watch!

Finally, been waiting for the new anime stuff to crop up. Sometimes something simple is the easiest way to explain the potential end of the world as we know it after all.

Now while these arguments have been spoken by those of much higher office than I many times before, it stands to reason that the man at least has a point. By using Punnett squares to make a simple cause effect list of the scenarios, it's easy enough to show where the best potential outcomes lie. Either we do nothing and get lucky, or do something, spend a little money, and have a manageable time.

Nobody wants the extreme cases where either we crash the global economy or end up living through what could be comparable to the biblical apocalypse in some ways, so we're left with one logical course: action. Those of us with business degrees will tell you quickly how important cost-benefit analysis is. It's the fastest way to determine how you get screwed the least in a transaction, and if this is to be believed, a pretty easy formula for picking what should be a necessary battle.

UR Doin it Right

First off, I'm new to the blog scene, so forgive my first few posts; I'm trying to find my legs.

I am often at odds with my peers due simply to the fact that I over-analyze everything. This trend does, however, have its advantages. I'll demonstrate by taking my first few outings into positive territory; Media Molecule is doing it right.

The following trailer is the formal announcement of LittleBIGPlanet 2. I'm going to briefly list just a few of the bullet points that make this not only a stunningly successful trailer, but an example of what more companies need to remember about their target audience.

(Video may not be available for mobile site.)

Music is not only fitting to the overall theme of Play.Create.Share., but immediately grabs the audience's attention.

IMMEDIATELY involves the userbase by reminding them of what an amazing thing both the game, and their creativity have created.

Segue's into an extended showing of new features and upgrades that were not only discussed at length on the forums, but by the developers themselves (if only in double-speak)

Throws out a blast from the past by reminding the audience that all their hard work is not only worthwhile, but will be fully supported once the new game hits.

For those of you who haven't played LittleBIGPlanet yet, I strongly urge you to do so. It's a wonderful game that not only has the charm and whit most of our realistic so-called triple A titles lack, but charms tastefully and at the same time without taking itself seriously at all.

I'll close by reiterating the video's most profound statement. LittleBIGPlanet isn't just a platform game, it's a platform for games.

Enslaved!

Finally! I remember seeing this back in the September 2009 issue of Game Informer(link's to some pretty neat screenshots of the game). It's supposed to come out sometime this year(2010) on Xbox 360 and PS3; published by Namco Bandai. I love these type of games, to be honest, and so when I saw this, I became really excited.

The story, to sum up, is about a guy named Monkey who lives in a post-apocalyptic New York City, where robots have taken over and are now capturing humans and shipping them off to who knows where. He meets a girl named Trip who apparently, is trying to get back to her village but can't do it on her own, so she needs him to become her bodyguard. I'm going to assume he refuses, which is why she might have put a collar on him, forcing him to bend to her will, and if he doesn't, well, let's just say it's not a good idea not to. They end up making a good pair, however, Monkey being able to beat up robots they come across and Trip with her ability to solve puzzles and hack things that he cannot.

I'm also really interested in their dynamic. In the magazine, they mentioned at first, he's really rough with her, tossing her harshly to where ever she needs to get to, and as the game progresses he becomes gentler with her, things like that.

Anyway, the real reason for this is because they revealed the first footage of it today. So I'm sharing with you. Enjoy.

(Video may not be available on mobile site version.)

Paying for Wii Online?

So yeah, apparently Shigeru Miyamoto said in an interview, that free online gaming with the Wii could change. Pay for online with the Wii? A ridiculous thought, to be honest. It doesn't even offer enough with the free online gaming. There are barely any titles that would even benefit from this, I can probably count them all on one hand. But then again, that's purely my opinion.

Using Friend Codes the way they do, isn't very optimal, they would more than likely have to perform a complete overhaul of the entire online system. And as much as I would like to see them do that, I think it would be for naught.

It'll be very hard to convince people that the Wii is a viable online gaming plaform, espesially since it's already been established that it's not. I think gamers have already concluded, if you want to play an online game, you do it with PC, PS3, or 360. After so many years of giving us the same thing, over and over again, it's really hard to change how people view you.

That said, I'd love to see what they think, they could do, to change this.

via [Gaming Center Online]

Kicking it Off With Something I Like

So, finally, Final Fantasy IX is coming to the US PSN. Soon, anyway, according to the PSN Blog. No actual date has been announced unfortunately. In anycase, this Final Fantasy happens to be my favourite one. It had a versatile cast of characters, who had depth and were more relatable than that of VII or VIII's, in my opinion.

One of the things I loved so much about IX happened to be Zidane. He was peppy, happy-go-lucky, and had an all out good view on life, for the most part. After VII and VIII, he was a breath of fresh air, all things considered. He never whined, or complained, he simply went ahead and did what he thought was right, and I commended him for this. Granted by the end of the game, he became slightly more downtrodden, but without spoiling anything, he certainly had every right to be.

Since this isn't a review or anything, just simply something I stumbled across, and wanted to kick this place off with something, I'll end it here. I hope there are others who share my excitement in the fact that Final Fantasy IX is coming to the PSN soon.

Anyone?

via [PSN Blog]
